I thought it was strange that the IBM i DB2 storage engine went
away so soon, but I guess Larry has his reasons.

Paul already mentioned this, but it may bear repeating that IBM-Rochester
developed the IBM i DB2 Storage Engine for MySQL - not Sun. They may have
relied on the MySQL developers for technical support, but my guess is that IBM
could have done it on their own, if necessary. How committed is IBM to
supporting it? That is the question! I hope somebody raises to the challenge
of supporting MySQL under PASE. I would think Zend and IBM would both have an
interest. Anyone else?

A longer term question is how will open-source communities react to Oracle
making MySQL more proprietary. The culture at Oracle is profiteering on
products, and they have the leverage to do it.
