What app did you use to get going and most
importantly, why?

Buck,

About 12 years go, my employer at that time operated a chain of hotels and
needed a Web application for guests to check availability and reserve rooms
online. That's how I got my start. It was an work assignment with business
objectives and justification.

How do I get web experience if the business specifically gives
web experience to the web team?

Transfer to the web team? Otherwise, how would your employer justify you
spending time on projects? It kind of sounds like you're hoping to come up with
some idea to sell your boss on to enable you you get into Web development. Is
that right?

I've done HelloWorld in like a dozen web languages and it hasn't
really enabled me to be a productive web programmer.

One of my neighbors works for Vision Solutions, and developed an IBM i Wiki on
one of their systems, but on his own time, mostly. He used RPG and CGIDEV2. He
taught himself. It didn't get much use until he began importing data from
Turnover, formatting it, and making it searchable. Then it took off. People
liked using it. He's getting ready to release an open-source version in
January, hopefully. He shared some information about it at our user group
meeting last month. It looks pretty good. Feel free to contact him if you'd be
interested in installing it. See http://www.appsoni.com/.

Since it uses an IBM i database and RPG language, you may be able to get the
hang of it more easily. Are there data or documents that could be imported,
that people might find more accessible via Wiki?
