Thanks Nathan. After playing a bit I have some other ideas as well. There is one additional field of info I'd like to prompt for and I'd like the same kind of app for the substitutes to review their assignments and update them. Trying to stuff all of that in a single screen is tough. I may navigate to a second page to display the info.

I always appreciate your perspective.

Date picker is not usable from Blackberry Storm. From Firefox I notice
that when you first load the date picker it doesn't highlight the dates
with the purple border for dates that already have an absence. It does on
the second time you pull it up though. Have you thought about using
modals instead of alert boxes?
