I don't know squat about subsystems and basic IBM i tuning, but Zend Core
runs as an Apache module of the Apache instance in PASE. I would expect that
the universe it runs in can be constrained by the settings on the ZendCore
subsystem and the resources available to that subsystem could be further
optimised by the typical Apache directives like StartServers and MaxClients.

I occasionally hear of tuning the number of Apache threads for CGI
workloads. PHP runs as a CGI job, after all. A PHP process may consume
about 64 meg in memory depending on the complexity of the workload, so most
folks try to keep the number of threads down. But that also depends on the
number of people hitting the shopping cart at the same time. You don't want
to deny service by constraining available threads. It can be a balancing
act, depending on workload complexity, and number of users.

Then of course, Zend would have you license their Platform edition, to
enable result caching and stuff like that. It all depends on workload
complexity, and number of users.
