Why? I've wondered the same thing many times? Seems like it's always been that way. IBM likes it, too. Where you have fierce dependency, you also have fierce loyalty.
I began learning Pascal about 12 years ago and it really altered the way I thought. One thing I liked about Pascal was that it offered the same data types found in C, so there was no problem interfacing with low-level Windows APIs. And Pascal compiled to very efficient code.
One disadvantage of Pascal, however was the lack of built-in functions. It didn't have anything like %subst(), %trimr(), %triml(), %trim() and other functions that you come to expect from a language. But that didn't seem to matter to the community of Pascal programmers. They had the mindset, that if you need it, you just write it yourself. And your version would likely outperform comparable functions in Visual Basic, for example.
