I think we are all agreeing semi-violently! The old way of doing this, as I understand it now, WAS to do browser identification. And I guess people just put up with the woes of that process. My original post really was about finding if I could use an ActiveX object - and I'm sure I couched it badly.

So all the best I've read when trying to find an answer has said, test the functionality, not the browser. Your point about future support for something is well taken.

I'm all too well aware of the non-standard issues in IE. :) My point
was, you should be writing code to look specifically for the support (or
lack thereof) of the functionality you need, not looking to see that
it's a browser that support (or doesn't support) what you need. That
way, for example, if you have a version of Gecko that supports ActiveX
ou can use ActiveX, even if the browser it FF.

I can't see why you would ever care what the remote browser is. I can
see caring about what it supports, but not what it is.
