Is it really a question of client vs server side,
or is it really just a thicker client side?

Well, perhaps a little of both. But it's hard enough to get the
relatively thin client-side browsers to co-exist, I can't imagine
getting thicker apps to co-exist... actually, yes I can imagine that.
It's called client-server computing, and that worked out really well! :)

And it's actually even worse than client-server since in c-s we were in
complete control of the thick-app, in the brave new world, the
thick-client app comes from a number of different people.

Take the example of ext js that was brought up before. Go to
http://extjs.com/products/extjs/ and click on the "Simple Tasks" link.
I'm now prompted to install something called Google Gears. So, now my
application is dependent on my app working, plus ext js working, plus
google gears working on Version X release Y of browser Z running on
Version Q release R of operating system S. And you thought DLL-Hell was,
um, Hell.
