With the greatest of respect I don't think you should confuse the issue by
inferring that .NET means C#.NET.
What I meant by that statement is that I don't mind C#.NET at all and
actually find it nice to write in (the little I have). I do a fair amount
of Java so C#.NET as a language made me feel comfortable near immediately.
The part I am not particularly fond of is when somebody takes a business
language like COBOL or RPG, slap .NET on it, compile it to SIL code, and
then call it "the same language you are used to, but better" (I am not
saying you have said this, just what I have heard from press releases).
And as for Windows being an inferior OS to i5 OS I guess you are entitled
to your opinion on that one (some may just disagree a tiny little bit) ;-)
Since you called that statement out - do you think Windows isn't inferior to
i5? Remember, we aren't talking development environments or languages
necessarily, but instead the ability to run an enterprise efficiently for
long term.

compliant (compiled) language, VB.NET, C#.NET, J#, RPG, Cobol and so on
(even PERL). One of the major attractions of .NET is that it is (virtually)
language independent ( and neither one is really any better than the other
since they all get compiled into the same intermediate code ) However I
accept that individuals will obviously have their own favourite language. (
a bit like a spell checker really, favourite, favorite ... both the same
darn thing, but which one is right?)
And as for Windows being an inferior OS to i5 OS I guess you are entitled to
your opinion on that one (some may just disagree a tiny little bit) ;-)

I don't have many qualms about .NET (or rather C#.NET). The UI components
are probably like the others I have used where they work good for most
things. My point more revolves around the fact (yes I said fact) that
Windows is an inferior operating system to i5OS. No I don't have time to
prove that to you in case you were going to ask :-) But I use both for
business related functions daily and I just don't think Windows holds a
candle to i5OS (note I am not talking languages or frameworks here - simply
OS).

Hey, I've got no problem being tied to a platform, I use both System i and
Microsoft <G>. My point was, you can't complain about being tied to a
platform and then suggest System i. If true platform indenpendance is
important to you, then java is just about your only choice. Sure, there are
other "web" languages out there (PHP) but I believe java is the only one
that has back-end capabilities.
Now, you can actually run .NET on non-ms platforms either through mono or
through the grasshopper product, but mainstream .net is ms-only.
As for what I quoted above... .net is feature-rich, .net is easy to use and
