I don't know if 4GLs ever went away, Lansa and Synon (I think this was the name) and ProGen have been doing this for a long time. The one difference I see with this package is the ability to generate native code for multiple hardware/OS environments from a single base code set. I think every other one I have seen were single OS based. I see this as much the same as Java (or at least what Java was envisioned to be), a single set of code that would run on any OS. GeneXus does it at compile time, Java does it at run time.

I was going to say the same thing, about how it's a higher level language like RPG/etc gets generated into machine code. So it is an interesting concept. But the question then arises, why not just have GeneXus go to machine code instead of an intermediate language? Wouldn't it be easier for the developers to do that instead of having to try and generate JAva, C, or any other language from their one language? (I'm sure there's more to it than that, though). Maybe it's an attempt to bring 4GL back, or introduce 5GL.. :) On Fri, 9 Jun 2006 16:58:38 -0500 "albartell" <albartell@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
Those are all of the same thoughts I am having. GeneXus states that you don't ever go back to the generated code but instead make all of your changes in the proprietary language. I guess I would relate it to RPG code being generated into machine code - GeneXus is just doing the next generation of that mindset and making programming "easier". This had made me think what programming will be like in 2020. Will we all be using tools like GeneXus? Just think how much better businesses could thrive if they didn't need to spend as much on IT programming as they do. I guess I am just frustrated with Java (i.e. Tapestry/Hibernate/Spring/Hivemind to be specific) this week and am dreaming of better days :-) The jury is still out concerning how well it works when the rubber hits the road. That is why I am hoping I can get somebody with real world experience willing to share the good times and bad. So, let me get this straight. This is an application that you write code in a proprietary language so it will spit out code in your language of choice. Write code that generates code. The basis behind it being what? Learn just the one proprietary langauge and you can program in any language? Yes, interesting concept. 10 bucks says it generates horrible code (or do we care?) Coding, sure, it may be fine. "Programming" on the other hand... I don't see it happening. I have seen a demo and was impressed with theease ofcreating a simple app. The basic concept is that youdevelop in theirproprietary syntax and then generate code for anynumber of languagesfrom that proprietary syntax. In concept this is verycool becausethey take the "pain" out of application development byabstracting thestuff that takes forever to do (ie putting theframework piecestogether) and instead the developer is only concernedabout pumpingout the next business logic app. Almost like thedifference betweenJava and RPG :-) Ok, so here is what I am wondering. Has anyone else onthis list usedthe product and how do you like it?
