But at that point, the Windows hardware costs are equivalent to the iSeries.
Then add in the licensing. Make sure you include all the anti-virus crap,
especially if you plan on running IIS. Add the costs of backup hardware,
media and software. Also all of your development tool seats (and don't tell
me I'm going to get by with the free versions of the tools, either).

Then start personnel. Start with the high-priced security expert - I'm not
talking your run-of-the-mill MCSE, I mean someone who actually understands
the machine and how to lock it down. Then your DBA for SQL Server. As well
as your IIS administrator. Only then do you get to your ASP developers,
your SQL developers, and your VB developers.

And THEN you get to worry about the next release of the operating system.
When will it get here? What will it have in it? How much of my code will I
have to rewrite THIS time?

If you want to play in the midrange league, make sure it's apples to apples.

But I promised myself I wouldn't get sucked into this stuff anymore. It's a
waste of time. I just have to hope that the word has gotten out and that
there are intelligent IT managers out there who will actually take all of
this into account and make reasoned decisions.
