Walden,

What would happen to a Wintel box if a .EXE file were loaded and run for
every person that connected to the site? How long would take long before
the entire system was destablized? They call that architecture CGI.
Although OS/400 CGI is perhaps an order of magnitude more efficient and
stable than its Wintel counterpart, it has its limits.

The obvious answer is to choose a more scalable architecture. Although
Wintel and Lintel server farms (running ASPs and Servlets) do offer a
scalable alternative, they also come with an extra, unnecessary system
deployment and management cost.

With Relational-Web, RPG programs can generate and return fully formatted
HTML streams to an end-user, nearly as efficiently, as OS/400 can generate
and return an ODBC or JDBC formatted stream to a server farm (which then
must convert the data into HTML). A scalable ILE architecture simply
requires less work to develop, deploy, and maintain.

Unfortunately, most people don't realize it. It seems that most OS/400
shops do deploy Active Server Pages, Servlets, or equivalent Wintel and
Lintel solutions. But there are native OS/400 alternatives which are just
as scalable.
