I'm on 9.6.0.3 also.

What are you doing to get the split screen?

I often use Ctrl+2 to open a second copy of the currently opened member in
a split screen.

I also often drag a second member to the right of the main editor pane to
open it split screen in that pane. But in this case it would always be a
different member.
I'd always work on the same member via the Ctrl+2.

I do this a lot and I don't recall ever seeing the error you describe.
