The different types of comments indeed make it quite difficult. I think I was hoping you could hook into the parsers which are already in RDi and which take care of the color coding.

Hi Peter,

The idea is great and you are not the first one asking for that. But ignoring comments is not that easy as it appears first. There are a whole bunch of different kind of comments that has to be ignored and hence know by iSphere.

For example:

PNLGRP:

".*" at position1 (easy)

CLP/CLLE:

/* ... */ at whatever position (requires parsing honoring line continuation)

RPG:

"*" at position 7 (easy)

RPGLE:

"//" at positionn7 (requires parsing of /free and /end-free) "*" at position 7 (requires parsing of /free and /end-free) "//" at any position (requires parsing of /free and /end-free and line and **free)

SQL/embedded SQL:

"--" at the beginning of a line
"/* ... */" in a middle of a line
(nearly the same as for RPGLE)

C/C++:

???

For RPGLE one also had to check for literals containing "//", etc.

So honestly that ends up in writing a parser for RPGLE and other languages, which is not what I want to do. That will be a never ending story.

Any other ideas to solve the problem?

Maybe allowing a regular expression that is applied on selected lines before they are added to the result set?

Best Regards,

Thomas.

Thanks for a great tool, Thomas!

I've got a feature request: would it be possible to have an option in the iSphere source file search tool to ignore comments? This would be quite helpful for me.

Keep up the good work.
