Sorry for the late reply. I do not know why the posting I sent yesterday
did not make it to the list.

iSphere does not reference any dependency starting with ID
"com.ibm.debug.*". Therefore I do not believe, that iSphere is
responsible for the update problems. I assume that iSphere is affected
by the problem rather than causing it.

What happens when you try to update your RDi with the IBM Installation
Manager? Does it find any updates for RDi? Does it show any errors?

By the way, the most reliable way to update iSphere is starting RDi with
Administrator privileges and using a local update site. You can download
the update site as a zip file from SourceForge. You do not need to unzip
the file. Just add it as an archived update site to the list of
available update sites.

I still consider setting up my own update server but did not yet made a
final decision. Obviously using SourceForge as an update site is no fun.

The first two times I tried it, came back with some "couldn't find
repository" error but I just tried again and it ran as before.

So in answer to your question, I think that since I posted that specific
url into the Work with field on the Available Software screen that I've
used a specific update site?

The error detail I get is:
Will be upgraded/downgraded: NI1 Fragment
Version: 1.3.0v20160105_1939
Id: com.ibm.debug.pdt.team.common.nl1

I tried the default option for alternate solutions which was: Update my
installation to be compatible with the items being installed.

This gave me a screen that says: "NI1 Fragment" cannot be fully uninstalled
because other installed software requires it. The parts that are not
required will be uninstalled.

I've cancelled back out of it now because com.ibm.debug.pdt.team.common.nl1
sounds like it might be something I need?
