If it helps, Susan Gantner wrote a useful article some time ago about the Screen/Print Designer tools - and avoiding the DDS Design Perspective.

A bit of tweaking and you have a single perspective that supports all of the design/edit/compile steps and reduces the amount of switching between perspectives.

Oh, I selected the option to have the DDS Design view pop up in
the RSE perspective for DSPF and PRTF source types. I don't run the DDS
Design perspective, itself. However, do you have the Properties view
loaded into the DDS Design perspective?
