This time I downloaded a fresh new trial copy of RDi to my brand new
Windows 10 laptop.
Everything worked okay up to and including installation successful
with help from company HQ, but they are stumped.
FYI:
Connection to the company server is VPN.
The RDi is apparently using the Java that downloads in the RDi package.
So, I launched it. It came up to the default panel arrangement: RSE on
the left, edit space in the middle, etc. Right clicked on the name of
the remote IBM i system and saw that it was connected (one of the
options was "Disconnect").
Right-clicked on a source member and went to "Open With" and "Remote
Systems LPEX Editor". All normal so far.
But instead of getting the code to edit, I get an error:
FSEF1002 Operation failed. "File system input or output error".
Clicking on Details, it shows a secondary text: "Message reported from
file system: Unable to establish a connection."
Okay, made sure the RDi still had a connection to they system. It
did/does. (VPN is still showing Connected as well).
What the heck?

Thanks for the tip Mike. I do have an old, old HP laptop where I plan
on installing Linux. I had put Windows 10 on it, and when I did, the
Windows guy at work told me to use the "Dark Theme" on it, so I did,
but I pretty much hate it anyway.
Don't remember how I installed it on my iMac originally, but I have a
Macbook I will also download to, soon.

First, I have RDi 9.6, my Java is very up to date...
Java installed on my system never used to matter.
Well, based on other comments you may be right. I found an IBM jdk
file in the /Applications/ folder on my Mac. (Sorry I forgot to
mention the Mac)

Tried quitting RDi then re-launching, nope.
Tried uninstalling RDi and reinstalling, Nope.
Tried creating a new workspace to work in. Nope.
Then tried deleting the old workspace directory to see if the new
one would now work. Nope
Then I tried deleting the new (and now only) workspace directory and
re-launch. (The welcome page was funny but) Nope.
Then I tried posting a message to the IBM RDi forum, and here we
are, seeing if anybody has a solution to this. (Licensing is not an
issue)
And now, I am cross posting the above list of "I already did this"
to this midrange list.
right-click and use 'Run as Administrator'? I've personally never had
an issue with this, but it seems to be a common source of problems.
I don't remember doing the right-click thing, but the ID I use is
/the/ admin for my Mac, and in any case anytime I do something that
needs admin it just pops up to enter the admin credentials input. On
the command line in the terminal for Macs you use sudo first and if it
needs it you get a prompt there for credentials too.
