My IBM IM shows no proxies and "Nonsecure SSL Mode" is not checked.

Any chance you're using a transparent proxy that does SSL inspection?
I've seen similar errors in java code where the proxy replaced the certificate information with its own, self signed, certificate. The users browsers were configured to accept the bogus certificate but java apps didn't.
