Some thoughts on ...

how would plumbers or carpenters react if they had to purchase new
tools every couple of years _and_ pay an annual fee for the privilege
of using them?

RDi need only be purchased once (assuming you purchase perpetual, as
opposed to fixed term license).

Plumbers' and carpenters' tools are geometrically less complex than an IDE

IDEs position to a far smaller market than wrenches and hammers (if there
was only, say, a one million person total market for hammers world wide,
you can bet that hammers would be a whole lot more expensive than they are
- simple economics)

Wrenches and hammers do not come with with maintenance agreements that
ensure the buyer will periodically receive new/improved versions of
their tools on a periodic basis (i.e. will therefore not need to
purchase more than once) in exchange for 20% per year of the original
purchase price
warrant that the tool maker will make reasonable efforts to fix defects
in any given version of their tool for a period of at least 5 years (and
perhaps longer)
provide them with access to a call center staffed by a crew of technical
SMEs

You have the option of buying a perpetual license and not paying yearly
maintenance. You would remain legally entitled to use the product, but you
just won't be able to contact Client Support and you won't get any new
releases. People who go down this route, often wish they hadn't when they
need fixes or a new release.

Since we are working hard to provide new value each year, and obviously
there is a demand for this new value (looking at the RFEs), then we need to
cover the cost of the salaries that are working on your behalf, otherwise
we can't stay in business, that is also simple economics.

Hi, Jon. I don't disagree with you at all. However, the price of RDi is a
stumbling block for some. I know there are many reasoned arguments as to
why
the cost is high, relative to other Windows products. Despite this, at the
end of the day, the product is not enjoying as wide an audience as it
should. (Adopting RDP/RDi should be a no-brainer.)

I appreciate there is the 60-trial available. However, this is a little
like
having a track day in a Ferrari - a wonderful experience but difficult to
justify owning one. (OK, perhaps not the best example.)

I'm sure most of us have used free software, usually "lite" versions of
full
products. If the "lite" version proves to be particularly valuable, we'll
stump up for the full version, maybe to overcome limitations or to take
advantage of the extra features. I'll admit I cannot see IBM ever adopting
this with RDi - but it doesn't hurt to wonder, "what if", eh?

Finally, let me pose this one: how would plumbers or carpenters react if

What you're talking about is what RPGNextGen does Brian - the only thing
they have missing is the syntax checker.
Perhaps what we should ask IBM to do is make the RPG syntax checker
available FOC for others to incorporate?
However, as a freelancer I can never understand why we think we should
not
pay for our own tools? When was the last time any of us hired a plumber
or
carpenter (or car mechanic for that matter) and had him turn up with no
tools >>and expecting to use ours? I see no reason why the freelancer
should not provide his own copy - and in most cases it is a fully
deductible expense.
