Just chiming in here as a Security consultant. Has anyone thought through
the companies policy about logging into a logged in desk top at the office
if no one is at the fiscal desktop or location. What are the chances of a
hacker hi-jacking the PC. I bet the VPN doesn't go directly to the PC. VPN
usually only goes as far as the companies internal network. Making an
active PC fair game to hack if the network is penetrated.

I'm talking out loud and looking for solutions so please don't shoot this
down without thinking about it and if you can provided a valid solution.
The solution is going to be important for everyone. Please don't say we
need to depend on our firewalls and building security because we all know
both of these items can be hacked.

Jim,

Can you just use Remote Desktop from home to access your PC at work? This
often works MUCH better than running the client on the PC at home, and
trying to squeeze all the TCP/IP traffic through the VPN connection. With
Remote Desktop accessing the development workstation at the office, you
get the same operational performance at home as you get at work.

Not sure if it would help in my case, but I have been dragging a laptop
between work and home for the last 4 years, and running WDSC/RDPi on it
when I need to. Now I'm giving the laptop up, but still want to run RDPi
from home occasionally. I don't think the license I have will let me have
RDP installed on both my office PC and my home PC at the same time with
the
same license. I don't want to pay for my own license for home, and the
boss is not thrilled about buying another seat for occasional use at home
when I'm VPNed in once or twice a month.

Other questions are - where is the work space located, and how do I keep
it
updated? Is it in the cloud as well? What kind of response would I
expect
to see if using the cloud instance?

Jon,

Just thinking aloud here, but I'd expect VERY LARGE organizations would
find this attractive. If the IT department employs many developers,
some
of whom may work remotely, this would be a perfect alternative to their
having to send their computing device back to home office for install.
Probably not as attractive for small business, but still useful for
large
accounts... This would be even more helpful in cases where Rational
Team
Concert is cloud hosted.

Yes, the current RD Power image is under the Bring Your Own License

There are other models, such as Pay As You Go, where you do not need

option.

OK Eric - sorry but now I'm confused again. If I own a license to RDp
_and_ need a PC to access the service it seems to me that the only thing
I
gain is that I'm saved the trouble of installing the software. The cost
of
that convenience is that instead of setting up RDp, I have to set up an
account etc., "rent" the server that runs the image, and, since that
server
is Linux, I will need to be (somewhat) familiar with the Red Hat
interface
to use it. I know cloud computing is trendy but I just don't see why
anyone
would bother.

Can anybody else see what I'm missing here?
