Yes that's how it's supposed to work, but..

I have noticed the same thing that the OP did.
Sometimes it seems I click on compile too fast and RDP hasn't caught up with the save being done.
In those cases, I just do what the op did and click back into the source long enough for RDP to remember that the save finished.

The Compile option is disabled while the source member is being saved.
Once the save is complete, the option is then enabled.

Sometimes I have to double click in the source or click around until
it becomes enabled.
