David, your bias is showing. You did promise to be open minded :-)
We saw an RTC overview a couple weeks ago. They talked about the i projects and I had the same thought you did, sort of :-)
After thinking for a couple weeks, I was playing with an IBM i project that I need to manage (since some source code vendors won't call me with options) and came up with a brainstorm for using the IBM i project as the PC side of the equation coupled with SVN to manage the source.
This is actually a source and object management solution because RDP saves objects to save files and they get managed in the IBM i project as of RDP 8.0 along with source. Then all the source and objects can be committed to an SVN repository that manages the local project.
I exported an entire product library (source and objects) from one system and imported to another in about 15 minutes.
While not ideal, I think I'm on to something quite interesting for those who want to manage source and objects in SVN. More to come........................

"Is anyone here using the i Project mechanism from within RDP ?"
Personally, I don't see a whole lot of value in it from a development perspective.
Off-line editing is a fine concept ... but how much pure editing do you do in an IBM i environment?
Personally, I don't do much ... I edit code, compile it, test it, edit again, compile it again, test it again, etc.
"Even with the validation capabilities of RDp (which I also don't see a whole lot of value in), you can only do so much off-line. "
IBM is touting this as the source control mechanism for IBM i
projects when using RTC.
Yeah, that's what Phil Colthard was touting it for a number of years ago ... but, and I won't harp on this a lot here, change control is a lot more than managing source.
