Richard,
I think the concept is actually useful in the RTC context. RTC can use the Jazz platform to manage source, which I understand to be somewhat like SVN, where checking in source generates a "delta" (only lines of code that changed) that is merged into the repository source. Not really sure if RTCi uses Jazz for source management...
In this scenario, a developer (or developers) may have source checked out to several change tickets, which incrementally add to a deliverable package. I looked into RTC when it was first introduced, and despite a lack of full tooling for IBM i, I'm intrigued by the ideas expressed by RTC. I see the product is now at version 3.

Subject: [WDSCI-L] Using RDP 8.0 i Projects
Is anyone here using the i Project mechanism from within RDP ?
IBM is touting this as the source control mechanism for IBM i projects when using RTC.
Actually in 8.0 it looks pretty robust because you can take any type of object off line, manage with a source code provider such as SVN and push to another system. It even appears to manage physical file and save file objects.
Now this probably assumes most new development initiates from RDP, but maybe that isn't such as bad thing :-)
