Just for my education
What does Quantum DB give you that you don't get with the RDp data tools
that come integrated?
I've added several things to my WDSC / Eclipse installation that
Rational does not offer (like the now defunct Eclipse Monkey scripting
project). In my opinion, this is one of the strengths of Rational's
choice to use an open platform like Eclipse. It allows Rational to
dedicate people to create IBM i-specific functionality that I cannot get
in the open source world. Conversely, it frees Rational from expending
time and effort to develop plugins that are already out there.
As for the Quantum DB plugin vs WDSC 7.0 Data Perspective, I can export
directly to Excel with Quantum DB (vs a CSV with the Data Perspective).
Quantum DB offers a 'bookmark' facility I find quite useful. I tried
Data Perspective's 'Save Offline' which showed me some progress bars and
then... nothing. No additional entries in the Database Explorer view,
nor in the Data Project Explorer view. The Help didn't illuminate my
ignorance.
I had some difficulty understanding how to create a Rational Data
Project Explorer project over an existing MS SQL Server database that I
wanted to analyse. I may run the tutorials found in the Help before I
say anything beyond 'it wasn't immediately intuitive to me'.
Caveat: I don't use either perspective very often, as my colleagues
prefer to keep SQL scripts in an IFS stream file directory and use IBM i
navigator to execute them.
Thanks for all you do, and best regards,
