"Replace as you type" only affects documents you create, as you create them.
They have no effect on existing (other user's) documents. You may need to
search and replace.

That's the cause of your problem. Go into the Autocorrect
options (it's in the Tools menu in Word 2003, not sure how to
find it in Word 2007, since I don't have that) and turn off
the Replace as you type option for converting straight quotes
to curly quotes.

Thanks, I've disabled it on my pc but the problem is coming from me pasting
text copied from other users' documents.
