I had all sorts of problems with the data perspective when I tried using it but after a tip on here to try the IBM data studio I'm sold. Give it a try. It runs your SQL "in batch" so it doesn't hang up your workspace. You can run multiple SQL statements concurrently. It has content assist as well that makes it really easy to select field names.

Chuck - I did qualify the library name and that did work too. Thanks for
the hint (although I'm not sure why it didn't work before when I thought I
was qualifying the library names).
