Hi,

I'm a Cobol programmer of nearly 25 years and I use RDp exclusively. I don't use SEU, SDA or RLU at all. I also have been completely converted to using embedded SQL for all my I/O.

The one thing that I have found saves more time than anything else is the code snippets. Not only do I have about 30 setup for small pieces of code but I've got half a dozen or so full program templates for virtually all types of program I can create (if I come across a new one then I create a new snippet). I use the parameterisation of the snippets to its full so I don't have to do the numerous search & replaces you used to have to do if you copied an existing program.

I would also suggest moving from OPM to ILE. Every program I'm changing gets changed from OPM to ILE as a matter of course. This then means I can use the content assist and the SEP debugging (which is fantastic).

I have dual 19" screens and have two instances of RDp running. One for editing/debugging etc. and the other for 5250 emulation/SQL (Data Studio).

The only other thing I then need to have open on my PC is Outlook.

Best regards,

Subject: [WDSCI-L] What features should I demonstrate as being smart in WSDCi?

Several years back WSDCi was evaluated in our organization by somebody
unfamiliar with Eclipse and rejected as he could not see any advantages
in using it with OPM Cobol (yes, not ILE) so we happily work with the
traditional green screens.

I may now have a chance for undoing that, and I was wondering if there
was more things that might be interesting to a CObol programmer than

* Many lines on the screen (as witnessed by the recent thread)

* Being able to do a lot of syntax checking while typing (and pressing
Ctrl-S)

* Having compiler errors in a window and inlined in the editor (I can
compile a simple Cobol program to do this)

* Having an outline of your source

* Navigate libraries, and files and members, and using RSE Extensions
seeing spool files etc.

I have considered demo'ing RDP instead but I believe the price tag would
be strongly prohibitive.

Any suggestions?
