The first step of the roadmap is getting rid of ADTS tools. IBM has
guaranteed that will happen by stabilizing the ADTS tools. Eventually OS
upgrades will break ADTS functionality, and we will have to turn to RDi.
The second step of the roadmap is getting rid of the 5250 green screen
interfaces in favor of browser based interfaces. I wonder if, once IBM
has System i shops moved onto RDi, they will push us off 5250
interfaces? Browser interfaces can be run without the 5250 interactive
tax. Maybe that tax could be used as an incentive to make all our
interfaces browser based. Or maybe the bright folks at IBM could find a
way to limit the number of 5250 sessions running at any one time.

I get the concept of the whole iseries developer roadmap thing. And
given
that plan, I can see why they're letting 5250 development tools
languish.
But I don't think they've stopped to consider that the plan might be ill
conceived, and so as they march on, they look back confused, wondering
why
not everyone is following them.
Perhaps it would have been better to enhance the green screen
functionality
in a direction that allowed a better transition into GUI eventually. I
liked the potential I saw in panel group logic, but it never developed
futher.

Buck,
In regard to no RPG enhancements, there has been some. Highlighting a
/copy line and having the option to open the source. Converting code
to
free-format. I don't know how long they've been there.
Those were in WDSCi 6.x; might have been in 5, too, but I don't
remember.
If IBM really wants to get people using WDSCi to spend money to get RDi,
it
sure would be nice if they'd come through with some improvements to make
it
worth our while. How long have we been waiting for them to replace the
CODE
display and print designer, and they're still not ready? I realize that
the
web development stuff like EGL and so forth is the direction they want
us
to
go in, but it would be a whole lot easier to sell to management if
they'd
show at least a little interest in supporting what we're working with
now.
I mean, it doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling to hear that the
screen
designer is late because 'the' resource (singular) working on it was
diverted to a higher-priority project. Oh, well.
