Although adding an entire web application development environment that
allows you to develop both thin and rich client applications for less
than three times the cost of the RPG-only tool just doesn't sound so
expensive to me.

For my clients that have subscribed to the WAS/JSF/JSP universe Joe that is true. But for those who have gone RPG CGI, .Net, PHP, Lansa, or whatever it is a very high price to pay for the database tools.
Which is the reason I like the integrated approach of EGL over cobbling together "free" tools to try to build a working environment. It's not the tools that are free, it's your time.
