Do you try the GWT (Google Web Toolkit)? I like it very much because it solves the following problems:
1. Javascript maintenance (Personally, I found it is very difficult to maintain as the system grow bigger.)
2. Multi-browser.

I didn't really try the JSF but since I tried the GWT I didn't look at others. Maybe JSF is good product but I don't have time to learn everything. For client side, GWT will be my primary devleopment tools.
GWT was not an option when we chose technology for my last web project - a license issue. It allows you however to outsource the javascript maintainance to Google which is in my eyes a sound decision :)

JSF does not compete in the same way but is a quite modular way to write xml that DOES stuff.

I would strongly recommend against any framework that required you to do more Javascript work than an occasional javascript:submit(). I guess you would agree with me :)
