Do you try the GWT (Google Web Toolkit)? I like it very much because it solves the following problems:
1. Javascript maintenance (Personally, I found it is very difficult to maintain as the system grow bigger.)
2. Multi-browser.
I didn't really try the JSF but since I tried the GWT I didn't look at others. Maybe JSF is good product but I don't have time to learn everything. For client side, GWT will be my primary devleopment tools.

Autogenerated Javascript is ok if it uses libraries etc properly.
I grew to like Java Server Faces (JSF) because the tag libraries allowed
you to mix different codebases in the same page and still have an idea
what was going on.
