You say that this can be disabled, but how do you find this checkbox to
deselect it?

It is not anywhere obvious on any of the Installation Manager windows.

You can disable this IM update checking by de-selecting the checkbox
"Search service repositories during installation and updates.".
Then IM won't check for any update. Note that the product's update may
specify a higher level of IM. In such a case, you'll be prompted
to update IM.
