I would not put it as EGL vs. Java, but EGL *and* Java.

I don't know much about EGL, but if it generates Java, I don't see why they can't complement each other. Some complex stuff is probably better of in Java, but, otherwise, enterprise information systems are probably much better served in EGL.

I hope IBM opens up EGL as they did with Eclipse and Websphere Express. Otherwise, it will share the same luck of Synon, Obsydian, and other brilliant tools that stagnated because nobody had enough $$$ to play and develop solutions with it.

RDBe/EGL distance learning info and registration:

As posted, the February classes are full so check again. Although it
will take time out of your day, it is worth it to see what can be done.

It would be nice to have a forum like this dedicated to EGL. I'll watch
for the wiki to open back up. I'll also post progress with the current
project I'm working on.

Keep us posted on whether RBD/EGL is successful in your shop. It would
be
good to get some real-world experience commenting on the forums. I
don't
expect EGL to be a silver bullet, but I would also like to know what
common
types of things should have been included but were overlooked. For
example,
one such thing I felt was lacking in JSF was the ability to easily lock
down
pages for authenticated users. Oddly enough a reasonable solution
didn't
really exist so I spun my own wool and posted the following
implementation:
http://mowyourlawn.com/blog/?p=6

That's my concern with EGL, that it will simply make writing Java syntax
easier and not have solid everyday patterns built into the tooling.
Time
will tell on this front.

When David un-locks the EGL page on the midrange.com wiki we should make
sure to add the distance learning class to that page. Do you have a
direct
link to that?

Thanks,
Aaron Bartell

I think the arguments likely to be heard about RDBe/EGL are that it's an
IBM product and it is not a true OO framework. In my opinion, it would
have to be open-sourced before we'll hear much buzz on theserverside.com
and onjava.com.

I've switched from deploying light-weight MS-ASP apps to JSP using WDSc
several years ago. It's refreshing to use tooling provided by IBM for
both RPG and web. I only wish I knew sooner that we had WDSc.
Initially I was skeptical about EGL. Then I read a couple articles by
Joe Pluta, attended a session or two at COMMON and participated in the
free distance learning classes conducted by Jon Sayles.

The distance learning classes was enough to convince me. We purchased
RDBe a couple months ago and are using it now for a project. I know
there will be cases where EGL cannot do what we need it to. But, since
it generates to java, I feel we can augment with native java/JSF
components. Maybe I'm wrong but we'll cross that bridge when we get to
it. I do know I won't be programming green-screens anymore. And that's
a good thing.
