I agree with all you have said David, but what about the small shop that
doesn't have the checkbook for a solid SCM package like MKS? I think
Subversion would be a good entry level iSeries source change management
tool. For instance, I work on a Java project that only ever has two or
three developers in the CVS repository and it isn't an entire ERP package
but simply a smaller software package for resale. Would be a tough sell to
purchase SCM package for just a couple senior developers. In the end do I
wish I had an SCM package to do mass compilings and everything you detailed
below - you bet :-)

Folks:

Speaking as a vendor of a SCM productt for the System i ... you should keep
in mind that change control on the iSeries / System i means more than just
keeping track of your source changes.

1. Source control (naturally).
2. Object control (rebuilding objects, when required, as they move from
development to QA to Production).
3. Data retention (when moving data objects into QA and Production).
4. Promotion control (making sure all required objects move at the same
time, including those not explicitly changed [to avoid level checks &
such]).
5. Error recovery (the ability to roll back a fix that was implemented in
error or had bugs that need to be backed out).
6. In some environments (usually enterprise level), keeping track of the
reason for the change (SOX, auditing, etc).
