Some people may be willing to pay a small premium for some of these tools
but 3500 each is WAY to steep. I mean come on you can buy 5 pcs for the
price of one license! Code was bundled with WDSC so this is nothing more
than taking something away that was once "free". Very very few people will
pay this especially since this is only a screen designer. They mentioned
nothing of print files. I will wait for a third party plugin or app and give
them my money as long as the price is reasonable.

Speaking as an underground WDSCi user on the list who's been actively

There are those who use it, those who know about it and don't use it, and
those who've never heard of it. I think that unless you've been hiding
under a rock, if you work on the AS/400/iSeries/System i you've probably
heard about it at some point. Personally, I've known about it for a long
time but just never got around to using it until recently. I've used Code
and Designer for over 4 years but never had a compelling reason to make
the switch. Late last year I decided to give it a try again and found
that it wasn't so bad.

I also agree with Jeff's comment that I can't justify that kind of money
on it. I may have to go back to editing screens and printer files the
old-fashioned way. If WDSC is based on Eclipse, which is open-source
(free), then couldn't the WDSC community develop their own enhancements,
or is that beyond the community's level of expertise? I still think of
supply and demand. If IBM supply's it at $3500 a seat but there is no
demand then they will either drop their price or drop the product. If
there's a little demand but not as much as they like they should still be
inclined to drop their price to increase quantity sold to maximize their
profits.

Personally, I think that the community has gotten used to the sales model
of bundling it with the OS. If they start charging by the seat then does
that mean that they plan on dropping the price of the OS? I'll believe
that when I see it.

Aside from the dozen or so active posters to this list, WDSCi is
essentially unknown to RPG programmers. Unless there's a secret
underground of WDSCi users we don't hear from on this list, there won't
be a long line howling about the AE situation.
