Jim,

You are spot on. The developer community IS the engine for adoption of technologies and applications for a particular OS. I was a big fan of MS before they started down the same short sighted road that IBM is now on. I have transitioned over to the Open Source community for tools and applications for just that reason.

If you want to make money in this business, you give away the tools and developers will use them to develop the applications that will drive the sales of what IBM really wants to sell: Hardware and services. Short sighted. Hopefully IBM will see the error in this approach and recant.

When will IBM get a clue? In OS2 days they tried charging big bucks for development tools and SDK's and M$ gave them away. Everyone other than big Corps wrote for Windows. It wasn't the big applications vendors that gave M$ it's nitch in the market (then it started charging for its development stuff). It was the little guy, the kid down the street that wrote a game or two, or someone that saw a need for a small specialty program and sold it as shareware. Look where OS2 is today and what we are stuck with!

There should be someone we (in one voice) can complain to. Common would be a good place (for those that can go), but for those of us who can't, to whom should we be directing eMails, phone calls, etc to? I for one would like to know who do we need to be letting know that we are unhappy with this (I know they probably won't listen especially if they have their own agenda, but I'll sure feel better).

If anyone knows a contact or two (maybe even couple hundred!!!!) that we can send our displeasure about this to, I'd like to know. Could you post it here?

Thanks,
