It looks like I made a wrong assumption.  When I right click on the 

filter

for spool files, I see two options to "Show in Table".  I know that the
first one in the list was created by SoftLanding, and the 2nd the

that works in a way that I don't like.  I was assuming that was IBM
programming to look at spool files, but - I was wrong.

One of those options was a specific Spooled Files view that we created, 
and the other was a table view that you get "for free" from RSE.  It is 
our code that populates it, but the same code that causes the tree to get 
items in it and options, also applies to the table.  When we first wrote 
the plugins that feature did not exist in WDSC and we just did not remove 
our custom view.
