Hi Bill,
I was able to get the debug to start, but working in it is a whole other story. I stepped into the program and set a breakpoint and hit resume and got a message that debug program and ended and that was it.
Using STRRSESVR and interactive debug, there is a 'feature' that, if the programme crashes with an RPG/CPF error etc., the debugger indicates the programme has finished. The STRRSESVR screen doesn't break with the error so everything looks ok - although it obviously isn't. Make sure the programme runs to, at least, the initial breakpoint before using the interactive debug.
So far I am not impressed with the quality of WDSC. It seems to have been released as a pre-beta version with many "GOTCHA's"...
I can kind of see where you're coming from... WDSC has some bugs, and some weird ways of doing things, but there is so much in here and it's got to be better than SEU for development - even RPG400 development. Used in tandem with CODE for DSPF/PRTF, development is WAY more efficient. OK, sometimes I still use Green Screen for support because it's faster - SEU only loads 20 lines at a time where WDSC loads the whole source so SEU will always be faster!
The 3 year plan here is to move off the iSeries completely and find
another
platform solution for our flagship application, I don't know if that decision can be changed, the perception is that the iSeries is an antiquated platform with no future.
It's been antiquated since it came out in the '80's but it's still the best platform out there - have fun looking for something better. Look at the Developer's Roadmap ( http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/enable/site/ideveloper_j2ee/descript.html) WDSC is the future! Part of the problem is that it has
taken so long for anyone to come up with a viable WEB interface that does not require hiring JAVA programmers and expanding the iSeries to handle the load of WEBSPHERE not to mention the added expense to beef up the desktops to handle JAVA applications.
Webfacing, HATS, PHP, CGIDEV2 AND Java. And they're just the names I'm familiar with. Regards, John Minihan Colman Computer Services Ltd. Cork Road, Tel: +353 25 32211 Fermoy, Fax: +353 25 31089 Co.
