Debra said that the Extender is a green screen only application - that is correct. It has nothing to do with the XML tools in WDSC. It gives you some ability to work with XML in SQL IIRC.
Well - I hunted down the handout from the presentation I mentioned earlier
- "XML and the Database", presented at the Toronto User Group annual
education conference, Spring 2006.
So, just to be clear - DB2 Extenders themselves do not run on the PC or
get launched from WDSC or anything like that. What I think they do (from
a 1000 km view) is this:
1) Allow you to store XML documents as a column in the DB (using a special
data type I think), and to query this column using normal SQL.
2) Provide tools for decomposing XML documents into DB records, or using a
DB table to produce an XML document. This is the "DXXSH[R]ED - XML to
DB2 (iSeries command)" and
"DXXGENXML - DB2 to XML"
Option 2 requires a DAD file, which tells the commands which XML elements
correspond to a particular DB field (or vice versa for generating XML).
WDSC can be used to help one build a DAD file. From the slide, WDSC can
"generate a DAD file. Use [the] DAD file with DB2 XML Extender to
retrieve data into XML files [or] store XML files to a relational
database."
That is, WDSC can help with the day-to-day usage of DB2 XML Extenders, but
is not required.
HTH,
Adam
