How long are you waiting? It definitely takes a long time. Also, if there are multiple updates, it seems to install them one at a time where each one does that initialize phase. So it could be that it is just going from one to the next faster since it is on your LAN and you are missing that phase. It definitely takes a few hours to go from 6.0 to the latest even using this techinique. All you are saving is the download times.
