RE: Advice needed for getting started -- WDSCI-L

Be careful to understand the mess of names that all use "WebSphere". You mention "WebSphere Application Server" here - that is not at all the same as WDSC in any version. So forget the Redbooks on WAS - they will mean nothing for using WDSC.

Also, the downloads you saw are pretty old - 5.0 and 5.1.0 - neither will upgrade to 5.1.2. If you can compile on the iSeries now, you should have the license for 5722-WDS, which lets you order the upgrade to 5.1.2, probably. You don't exactly need an SF* anything - you need a feature code. Someone listed an archive article from this group that will help you order the right thing. Or talk to your BP.

You will probably need to get some PTFs - there is an option in the install and in WDSC itself to check for what it needs on whatever OS release you have.

If you do download 5.1.0 (don't do 5.0, and stay with the standard version, I'd say), you will need to install the whole thing. It'll take a lot of disk space, but you can use only the CODE part, which does not need as powerful a PC as RSE (WDSC) does.
