Then why would the delete let me the other lines?  For example, if I have 
the following:
This is line one
This is line two
This is line three
This is line four
If I highlight all four lines except the r and the end of four, I can hit 
the delete key and it goes bye-bye.  But if I also include the final r 
nothing is deleted.

In the non-stream selection modes, the cursor is not coupled to the
selection.  And, similarly, neither are the keys.  That allows you, for
example, to select some text then move the cursor to another location and
copy (Alt+C) or move (Alt+M) or overlay (Alt+Z) it, etc.  Typing won't
replace the entire existing selection with the new character, Delete key
won't delete it, and so on.

For most of the LPEX selections (non-stream) you use Alt+D to delete them.
