<Mark> I hate to say it, but if your boss cannot equip your developers with PC's that cost under $999, you probably just shouldn't be using PC-based development tools. That is not a slam or crticism either. Your developers are going to easily burn up a $1000 in productivity using this stuff on old undersized equipment. </Mark> I 100% agree with your statement Mark. A few years ago when I first started doing non-green screen development (with RPG and HTML) I counted the seconds and minutes it took me to do basic tasks on my PC. Many times my PC would hang and crash because of lack of horse power (I think I had a Pentium 266MHz with 64MB of Ram). I moved up to a Athlon 600MHz 128MB of Ram once my manager realized how much time I was spending waiting for things to happen, and rebooting. I am now on a P4 2.0GHz, 512MB of Ram, 40GB HD. I hate to say it, but I needed the space and horse power because of the way IDE's and the like are composed. For instance I have WDSc and the Microsoft .NET framework and Visual Studio; that alone takes up about 5 Gig of storage! YIKES! But I don't have a problem paying an extra 10 bucks for that 5 Gig because I get a ton of features and productivity gains. What parts of the tool do you use? Also, is reclaiming hard drive space really that important? Most PC's these days are not tight on disk space. Removing unused apps will not do anything to help your RAM or CPU usage (which is where most PC's are limited). If you only want to use Code/400 or VARPG, you would probably be safe deleting the C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere Studio folder. (Assuming WDSC 5.0). You would probably have to put it back anytime you wanted to apply a Service Pack or do an uninstall. I would copy the folder from one PC to a network server so that I could put it back before doing those things. Dave Boettcher <DBoettch@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: wdsci-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx 05/02/2003 03:35 PM Please respond to Websphere Development Studio Client for iSeries <font size=-1></font> Can anyone tell me if there are any parts of WDSCi that could be removed, thereby reducing the hard drive requirements? We will not be using the JAVA or web facing portions of the tools and my boss would like to be able to use the minimum size PC or maybe even the ones we have. ;^) So, I am researching sizes and have really found no references on removing portions after install, only that there are no choices during install.
