As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

Silly question perhaps, but are you set up in your live
world/environment and trying to access it on your live
world/environment?
Did you give yourself a default branch in 6/SSP?
Try using option 17/SSU to change your branch. Perhaps that will get
you past this issue...
