There are multiple reasons to keep custom objects out of original ones.
First is a fundamental principle of application cycle and development:
isolate your own code and don't mess with the base one. If you breach this
rule, you'll be hurt in a way or another.
Second reason is compliance, both with software suppliers with auditors.
Third reason comes when using a tool for application life control ( Aldon /
Implementer / ... ) that stops changes in vanilla libraries.
Fourth is a future upgrade : less mixed customization will bring less
headaches.
Fifth is HA (like mirroring) ... and quality environment refreshes ... and
DRP ... and we could go on ...
In our case, we took a very structured approach : LFs names clone PF names
with a significant suffix added. We have custom libraries ( data + prog +
source ) at the top of S21 LIBL. We have Aldon that controls development,
objects move and dependencies. We also created a restore & DRP mechanism
that keeps track of dependencies so that PF are restored before LFs.
Hope that helps.

Sounds great in theory Mike but you need to keep the custom files separa
te from the standard ones.

You should just store the logicals in the library with the phys= icals.
Then
the restore will work and you wont have to wo= rry about juggling
library
lists.
If you have a= multiple environment situation, you probably have a
consolidat= ed data file library anyway.

Bill,

The IBM Redbook "Geac System 21 - Implementation for AS/400" is= an
excellent
resource http:/www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg2= 45967.html
and has great examples of naming conventions. = See Chapter 11
(Customization) and page 390 for specifics.
<= /TT>
One other thing to consider is if you create logicals over Syst= em 21
physicals you might want to have custom libraries with a = name that is
lower
in the iSeries sorting order.
<T= T>Our custom libraries all start with the first letter of 'Z'. The
re= ason for
this is in the event of system restore resulting from = a disaster, a
disaster
test, hard drive failure, etc. when you = restore your libraries it is
generally done via a RSTLIB *NONSY= S or some equivalent method. These
methods
restore the librarie= s alphabetically starting with 'A'. The restore
can
not
restore= logical files if the physicals do not already exist on the
system.
</TT= >
In our case all of the System 21 and other libraries will be resto= red
before
any of our custom 'Z' libraries.
I h= ope this makes sense as it is a very important concept. Worst case
is that if you did not use this library naming convention you wou= ld
have to
manually recreate or restore all of your logicals af= ter everything
else
was
restored in a disaster. However, = you usually have plenty of other
things to
keep you busy in a d= isaster and this would delay recovery.

It's common practice to suffix the file or program with a U. = eg.
OEP72U
Also to put the object into a non GEAC lib= rary. Eg. OSLRICP3 for
programs
or OSLRICf3 for fil= es.
Associate a program with a task number in the 99xxxx ra= nge.
I hope that this helps.
Marcus.
