Wayne,

The S/21 "system libraries" usually start with "IPG", then the system app
(AM for Application Manager, CF for Common Functions, etc), then library
type (P for programs, F for files, etc) and 3 for version 3.

Believe it or not, there's quite a lot of method to S/21's library madness.
Do NOT do like a customer did about ten years ago ... deleted all the
libraries that started with IPG just because he didn't use the IPG product
(CASE tool wannabe from the early 90's).

By the way, Wayne:  That commotion you're hearing outside your door is the
mad scramble of consulting companies preparing to offer you their services.
In the meantime, feel free to contact me directly if you have other specific
questions ... I'm a lot cheaper.

A simple but vital question: What are system libraries? I have identified
one called OSLSYS that seems to fit the description. I one appendix of a
manual I found a set of modules that are classified as "Infrastructure".
Included in this group are modules like "Application Manager" and "Machine
Manager". Those look like "system" functions to me too. Is there an
"official" list of what constitutes system and what is application?

Depending on how you apply your PTFs...

We apply our PTFs to a test environment first.  All displays, tables and
code go to a series test libraries.  When we want to work in test, we change
the environment at user sign on and use a different set of library lists
that have the test libraries higher up on the list.  That way, we can test
the task without affecting the production users...

The only short coming that I can see is that we only have one set of system
libraries.  If there is a significant change to system mgr objects, then it
would impact production....

One thing that worlds buys you over the S/21 environment setup is the
ability to apply and test PTFs without affecting menus, task definitions,
etc in the live Application Manager environment.

My company has Sys21 installed into environments (Test, Blank, and
Production).  This works great without the risks of a "world" concept and
allows us to test out uplifts without impacting production.  We can do
anything in test without having to affect production and feel confident that
the results will be the same.  If we run into a problem, we can take the
production data over to test and replecate the issue.

We paid Geac to set this up for us as we were told that our original
implementation by JBA was non-standard.  Does any one else have experience
with "environments" and would like to comment?
This may be an approach that you could use to go through the upgrading
(which we had to do for Y2K) you mentioned.

Greetings!
I am a system21 newbie who is about to have a huge learning experience.
Having just started at my current company, I have been given the task of
taking the company's software through what looks like several revisions
(uplifts? upgrades?). To make things more interesting, I am supposed to
install these upgrades to a set of libraries which duplicates our production
libraries. I am told that this duplicate set of libraries is called a
"World" by the Geac folks and I have reviewed a document describing the
creation of this "world".

Does any of this sound familiar to the list members? I am looking for
comments, suggestions, warnings, and any other information to help me reduce
the number of pitfalls in this process.
