If you just need information stored, about an item, for report/query - I
highly recommend that you look into additional text and text types as
accessed in the item maintenance, first screen, F21 key.
I understand that the alternate reference can be used to print on shipping
documents (although I am not intimately familiar with the process) and is a
search option when prompting for item numbers in any module.  So it's a
great place for customer part numbers, but in my opinion,  that's about it.

P.S. If you want to print a supplier's part number on the P.O.,

Is anyone using the Alternate Item reference F17 in Item Maintenance.  If
so where does this alt. ref. print? And can you use two lines per item
description as the alt.reference?
