I think Bruce Vining answered this question authoritatively. To my
knowledge there has never been a "DB1" anywhere. What you are referring to
are LPPs that were a bunch of useful utilities that IBM shipped free with
the S/38. They did need to be loaded separately. The database on the S/38
was never really named, although we all knew it was "Db2 like". Later the
database became known as Db/400, but I don't know if that was official or
not. Once the final name IBM i was announced it became Db2 for i.

Thanks Birgitta

Does not answer my question ,'was there a DB1?'

I googled DB1 only reference I could find was

5761-DB1 IBM System/38 Utilities for System i
5761-DB1 IBM System/38 Utilities for System i IBM United States Sales
Manual
Revised: January 29, 2008.
Product Life Cycle Dates Back to top Abstract System/38 Utilities for
System i
is a program providing System/38-compatible database utilities for the
iSeries
or i5/OS (TM) system customers who migrate from System/38.

I know the S/38 database was not known as DB1, also these utilities
allowed S/38 WRKQRY? to run on AS400
else it was a real pain to convert the S/38 queries.

So perhaps in conclusion the S/38 database was DB1, but not named
explicitly.

DB stands for database ... and IBM i is the only operating system where
the database is integrated.
Nevertheless the name of the database on IBM i is Db2 for (IBM) i (with
a lowercase b!)
Since the database is integrated in the operating system it does not
include a version or any other numbering. The "version" of the database
depends on the IBM i Release
