Does not answer my question ,'was there a DB1?'

I googled DB1 only reference I could find was

I know the S/38 database was not known as DB1, also these utilities allowed S/38 WRKQRY? to run on AS400
else it was a real pain to convert the S/38 queries.

So perhaps in conclusion the S/38 database was DB1, but not named explicitly.

Since the database is integrated in the operating system it does not include a version or any other numbering. The "version" of the database depends on the IBM i Release
