The current proper name for IBM i database is "Db2 for IBM i", or
shortened, simply Db2.

Just wonderingand
If you need to save the document for keeps,
why not store it permanently in a Blob field in the DB?
(the last I heard it was called DB2/400)
When needed, extract it (using SQL) to a temp dir in the IFS and let the
user open it.

Sure ?
Alternative 1: read the IFS file with SQL into a BLOB field - encrypt
outwrite it out with SQL again
Alternative 2: read the IFS file with IFS APIs - encrypt and write it
SQLwith IFS APIs.
With SQL there is the chance that you can also do the encryption with
image- if the algorithm is supported.
HTH and kind regards,
