Perhaps part of the problem is this is a RPG list and your asking
questions better suited for the midrange-l list so don't be surprised if
some answers are bent towards RPG.

So does it mean SQL join can not be used here only RPG program could
provide desired matching results here ?

I guess it has something to do with how different OS represent the bit
patterns as various data types.

IMO there is something more fundamentally wrong when trying to join
files using fields of different type.
The solution is a band aid on a mortal wound.

Did you try to cast the numeric as character?
You also may need to Trim blanks.
